WEAVING KINSHIP AND PALESTINIANNESS IN THE INTIMATE CONTEXTS OF FAMILY LIFE

Abstract
In this article, I seek to analyze certain ethnographic scenes that led me to reflect on the relationship between Palestinianness and kinship, paying special attention to those moments in which kinship is experienced, exemplified, and performed. I chose to record not the "structures" and "forms" that kinship assumes, but rather the ways in which people relate to one another, since recording the ways in which family members establish bonds with one another constitutes a description of more or less cohesive and overlapping modes of relationality. By analyzing the relationships established between members of a family, my intention is to explore how Palestinianness is embodied across different generations in the intimate contexts of family life. Thus, experiences surrounding "home" and "objects" emerge as central. My intention is to demonstrate how Palestinianness, understood as the (ethical) effort to be part of an imagined community composed of Palestinians from different times and places, is dependent on certain ethical-political repertoires learned in intimate spaces (the family, for example). In other words, participation in imagined communities depends on coexisting with diverse forms of cultural intimacy.
