Abstract

This article deals with the axial lines that support Northrop Frye’s Western literature historical view. In this sense, the seminal influence of the Bible’s typological interpretation is taken into consideration. According to Frye, the Scriptures can be considered as a model for reading and studying literature. On the other hand, it is our intention to examine Frye’s critical writing from a Cultural-rhetoric approach in the terms proposed by Tomás Albaladejo. This approach permits a fruitful rereading of his polemical view of literature as “a science as well as an art.” Finally, we have paid heed to the rhetorical device of the metaphor and its presence in Northrop Frye’s literary criticism, also taking into account Tomás Albaladejo’s notion of the metaphorical engine.
