Resumo

Existe muita confusão e superposição entre os distúrbios do sono e as epilepsias, que variam de eventos fisiológicos a hipersonia, insônia e parassonias. O uso de registros polissonográficos sob monitorização audiovisual tem possibilitado a caracterização de novos fenômenos e entidades nosológicas, com melhora acentuada das abordagens diagnósticas. Este trabalho é um guia clínico e revisão da literatura do uso da polissonografia (PSG) para o diagnóstico dos distúrbios do sono e epilepsia. Também revisamos a distribuição circadiana das crises e os efeitos recíprocos das crises epilépticas e do sono. O exame polissonográfico pode ser indicado para: pacientes com parassonia ou com crises epilépticas sono-relacionadas que não respondem à terapêutica convencional; para o diagnóstico das interrupções do sono que possam estar relacionadas às crises epilépticas e quando existe suspeita clínica de ocorrência de movimentos periódicos das pernas no sono.
