“Deprived of Showing His Own Rights”: the Petition of a Freed Black Men in the Captaincy of São Paulo (1819)

In the early 19th century in São Paulo, Afro-descendants had limited options to assert their demands, and sending petitions to the governor was one of them. Manoel José, a "preto forro" (or free black man), used this mechanism to petition the governor of São Paulo after he felt wronged in a debt case. In 1819, he reported being beaten and arrested without a prior order from a judge, which left him feeling “deprived of being able to show his rights”. From this case, therefore, we can perceive and analyze the challenges that free blacks faced in affirming their freedom in this society.
