Abstract

This paper proposes an analysis of the context in which young people of Latin America and the Caribbean are located, and in particular of Mexico, which is characterized by acute multidimensional marginalization and violence; structures of inequality that constitute the living space of young people, their biographical experience, and greatly condition the exercise of citizenship, their access to worthy, fair and safe alternatives of life. This region is inserted in the globalization processes with implications that are expressed in the vulnerability of the economic security and the harmony of the social network of vast population groups, and that are interrelated with an unequal distribution of wealth, high marginalization, impoverishment, broken families, an increase in crime, a raise in unemployment, lack of access to education and lack of access to healthcare, among others. In general, the design and implementation of projects to improve the quality of life, does not consider the participation of the young population. The spiral of violence youth in the region face threatens their basic human rights to equality, freedom, and justice, to living with dignity and, in situations of extreme violence, it violates their most fundamental right: the right to life.

Keywords: youth, citizenship, globalization, exclusion and violence.
