Abstract

The writing of medical knowledge has been a remarkable turning point in the influence of this art. The former doctors, whose profession enjoyed a high regard, had to perfect their activity by memorizing the experiences of the patients and/or by archiving the therapeutic treatments and recipes in writing, and a certain code of conduct. Unfortunately the universe of medicine was very complex, where not only free men, freedmen and slaves mingled, but also great theorists, hippocratic rationalists and charlatans, impostors, murderers who, without scruples, exploited public credulity.
