Abstract
This article aims to analyze the relationship between exile and memory in the work of the Lithuanian writer and filmmaker Jonas Mekas (1922-2019) in view of the diary I had nowhere to go. Diary of a displaced person (2017 [1991]) written during the artist’s years in German forced labor camps in World War II until his arrival as a refugee in New York City. In the first moment, we discuss the diary as an artistic and subjective object. In the second moment, we investigate how exile and memory permeate Mekas’ work.
