Books as tools of knowledge: a translation of the sixth chapter of ᶜAbd Albāsiṭ Alᶜalmawī’s book, Almuᶜīd fī Adab Almufīd wa Almustafīd

Abstract
The present article consists of a translation to Portuguese of the sixth chapter of the book Almuᶜīd fī Adab Almufīd wa Almustafīd (The assistant to the useful and advantageous literature), named “Questions concerning the decorum with books, which are the tools of knowledge, and what pertains to how to correct them, amend them, store them, work with them, buy them, borrow and lend them, copy them, and so on”, written by the damascene preacher ᶜAbd Albāsiṭ Alᶜalmawī (907-981
H./1502-1573 d.C.). This chapter broaches the handling of books from both the standpoint of their circulation and acquisition and the standpoint of their writing process. In that regard, it focuses on the context of Islamic religious studies and, overall, employs examples from the so called ᶜilm alḥadīṯ or “prophetic science”.
