Scientific Tourism for the public in Campos Gerais National Park (PR, Brazil), in situ and surroundings: current status and potential

Abstract

Scientific, Natural, and Cultural Tourism is characterized by visits to sites of scientific interest, offering experiences that promote awareness and understanding of scientific research and conservation issues. With the establishment of protected areas and the increasing need to integrate conservation, education, and tourism, there is a growing demand for practices that contribute to science communication. So, the development of interpretive strategies enables the translation of complex concepts into accessible and engaging language for the public. In this context, this study surveyed cultural tourism initiatives with a scientific dimension, specifically those associated with environmental interpretation practices in the Campos Gerais National Park. The methodology involved bibliographic and documentary research, on-site visits, and interviews with local tourism agents operating within the park. The study concludes that the park attractions remain underexplored, given the vast amount of available scientific data. This includes nearly 350 years of historical and cultural heritage within the park and its surroundings, as well as a paleo-history dating back approximately 250 million years. Both represent legacies that need to be recognized, protected, and interpreted for all audiences.

    Bachelor's degree in Tourism, Master's in Tourism and Phd Candidate in Geography (Ponta Grossa State University - UEPG).

  • B.Sc. Rodrigo F. Moro, Ponta Grossa State University

    Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences, environmental consultant for flora and fauna issues of the Mixed Ombrophilous Forest and associated fields, as well as an assessor of high conservation value areas.

  • Ph.D. Rosemeri S. Moro, Ponta Grossa State University

    She holds a degree in Biochemistry (UEPG, 1980), a master's degree in Botany (UFPR, 1991), a PhD in Biological Sciences (Plant Biology) from UNESP in Rio Claro (1999) and a post-doctorate in Forestry Engineering (UFPR, 2009) with an emphasis on Nature Conservation. He is currently a Senior Researcher at the Ponta Grossa State University in the Postgraduate Program in Geography (concentration area Territorial Management and Socioenvironmental Analysis).
