Abstract

This review aims to present the book Terms of Exchange: Brazilian Intellectuals and the French Social Sciences by Ian Merkel, published in Portuguese in 2023. The author is interested in the role played by Brazil in the development of French social sciences, focusing on the exchanges between Brazilian and French intellectuals. By analyzing the academic trajectories and intellectual projects of Lévi-Strauss, Fernand Braudel, Pierre Monbeig, and Roger Bastide – intellectuals who, after being in Brazil, went on to hold prominent positions in French research institutions – Merkel demonstrates how Brazil provided an opportunity for them to explore new methods and theories in social sciences. Additionally, the author highlights that this experience abroad, albeit unevenly, contributed to the advancement of these French intellectuals' careers upon their return to Europe.
