Abstract

In the introduction to this dossier, we discuss the theme of memory, including references to the new African novel, autobiographies and reportage books on the African colonial period and the events that followed independence in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as theoretical discussions linked to the question of experience. During these discussions, we have inserted some bridges between the themes dealt with by the articles that make up this dossier which, although carried out in heterogeneous spaces and contexts, remind us of the importance and topicality of investigating the “ghosts of memory” in the terms referred to by Carsten (2007).

Author Biographies

  • Melvina Afra Mendes de Araújo, Universidade Federal de São Paulo - Unifesp

    Anthropologist, associate professor at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and researcher associated with the Institut Français de Recherche in Afrique (IFRA – Nairobi). She carries out research in the areas of political anthropology, anthropology of religion and anthropology of contemporary Africa. Conducts fieldwork in Kenya.

  • Clayton Guerreiro, Universidade Federal de São Paulo - Unifesp

    PhD in Social Sciences from Unicamp with a sandwich period at Utrecht University (Netherlands), Master in Social Sciences from the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and Degree in History from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Unirio). He is currently carrying out post-doctoral research in the Postgraduate Program at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp).
