Abstract

Social assistance in Brazil is an important policy in combating poverty, recognized as a key tool of social protection. It includes programs such as Bolsa Família, now renamed Auxílio Brasil, and the Benefício de Prestação Continuada (BPC), which seek to provide financial support to families in vulnerable situations. However, recently there has been a regression in social policy due to fiscal austerity, resulting in a reduction of resources and negatively impacting public services. The Covid-19 pandemic has further exacerbated the crisis, increasing unemployment and poverty. Social assistance plays a crucial role in providing aid during the crisis, distributing assistance and strengthening local solidarity networks.
