Abstract

The text executes a brief historiographic journey on the subject of Independence in the province of Maranhão. To do so, it marks the 1860s as the moment of formulation of a founding narrative of the first interpretative headquarters on the subject; afterwards, it explores the permanencies that guided this headquarters between two ephemeris of the Independence of Brazil/Maranhão, located in the years 1922/1923 and 1972/1973; finally, it explores, for the last two decades, the elements of historiographic renewal of the theme. On this route, it establishes approximations with the premises that guided (or still guide) studies on the Independence of Brazil, in search of specificities and similarities of the production explored here.
