A Revolta de 1842 e as “duas leis de sangue” na província de Minas Gerais

Abstract

This paper aims to understand how the rebel's motivations for the rebellion of 1842, the fight against the “two bloody laws,” were presented to the political bases that intended to mobilize in the province of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The sources are mainly the newspapers of Minas Gerais, which protagonist the motivation of rebellion, highlighting O Universal. The situationist newspaper O Correio de Minas has also been thoroughly studied, along with O Astro de Minas, A Ordem, and the Maiorista. The article treats the “two blood laws” - the recreation of the Council of State and the reform of the Process Code - then analyses how the opposition press-related these two laws to the interests of its different readers.
