Abstract

Throughout the 19th century, indigenous peoples living in Rio de Janeiro suffered a violent process of land expropriation – mostly backed by legal procedures. This work aims to rescue this process, accompanying the actions taken by the Imperial State to vacate indigenous lands and allocate them to new owners. In this scenario, we should also account for the role of the District Ombudsman and the Orphan’s Court, entities entitled to protect indigenous heritage, in dismantling the heritage of populations living in reductions in Rio de Janeiro during the 19th century – an important investigative path to unravel this issue.
