D. Pedro I, the Andradas and the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly

Abstract

This article presents the process that culminated in the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly of 1823, based on journalistic sources from the time. By focusing on the central role of the press in the unfolding of events, the text reveals the ambiguity of the actions of the Andrada brothers, especially José Bonifácio, before and after their departure from the ministry. Their use of the press to persecute opponents and exalt their actions is evident not only in the publication of Tamoio, but also in the control they maintained over the Diário do Governo even after their dismissal. The article concludes with a question about the real objectives of the Andrada brothers' violent campaign against the government.
