Abstract

The present article comments on Edward E. Baptist’s essay The Second
Slavery and the First American Republic considering his statement that
the US South represented the core of the Second Slavery. Therefore, the
history of the First American Republic can be considered an essential
component of the history of the Brazilian Empire. The article explores
such an idea by means of a brief exam of the Brazilian coffee economy.
