Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze the narratives of Eça de Queiroz, considering them part of a process of raising awareness about the Portuguese social reality. Therefore, some important points of the author's literary works, his letters and press texts are discussed. The aim is to demonstrate that the criticisms directed at Portuguese society are intertwined with the uncertainties, doubts, anxieties and selections that are part of the author's aesthetic elaboration.
