Ramachandran et al. foram os primeiros a introduzirem o uso do espelho para induzir a sensação cinestésica em membros amputados. Os mecanismos neurofisiológicos envolvidos para explicar a terapia–espelho ainda não são claros, mas estão relacionados com o efeito causado pelo feedback visual em áreas corticais sensóriomotoras. Essa entrada visual pode ser o suficiente para evocar a percepção cinestésica em certas circunstâncias. Neste contexto, a terapia-espelho é uma possibilidade segura e útil que vem demonstrando resultados positivos na recuperação funcional de pacientes com hemiparesia pós-acidente vascular cerebral.
