Resumo

Forame oval patente (FOP) ocorre em 10 a 15% na população geral. Recentemente FOP tem sido encontrado em 45% dos pacientes com AVC criptogênicos e em 23% daqueles com doença aterosclerótica de grandes vasos. O mecanismo pelo qual o FOP associa-se a AVC não é bem estabelecido. Nos casos de FOP e AVC pode-se instituir tratamento clínico, cirúrgico com fechamento do FOP, ou uma nova modalidade que é o fechamento por cateter transcutâneo.
